Trainer Spotlight: Dan Bohenek

Earlier this year, when Bionic Body first opened their doors and was the new kid on the Hermosa Beach block, the first person I ever took a class with was Dan Bohenek. I came to Dan feeling kind of broken. I was still having a problem with pain in my left shoulder, and I had just run a half marathon and was dealing with bad shin splints. Long story short, I had a long list of disclaimers of what I couldn't do in class.

What made me a fan of Dan then was that he really took the time to work with me and explain all the things that I could do to get my body in proper alignment, and various stretches and strengthening tools to help start to heal my body. In fact, at no time since I've taken his class, does he allow any of his students to not have proper form, working one on one with you to make sure you get it right.

Dan is a Massachusetts native who escaped the Northeast winters for the warm sunny beaches of California to make a fresh start. He was a standout wrestler and football player in high school, and went on to play football at Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire, where he was an all-American, and set numerous records for the school.

Because of his background in sports, Dan felt like it was a natural progression to become a personal trainer, and said it's something he just kind of fell into. I found out some other fun (and sometimes peculiar things) about him as well:

How do you stay motivated to eat healthy and exercise?

I have been both in peak physical condition and very out of shape. When I feel in shape, I have a lot more self-confidence and feel almost invincible. I feel as if my body is capable of anything, and I get addicted to that feeling. I always want to feel like that. That is my motivation...

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A firefighter. I always wanted to help people.

What is the best trip you've ever taken?

As soon as I got my license, my two best friends and I went camping in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. We camped there all week. It was my first real taste of freedom and gave me memories I will remember forever.

If you only had one day left to live and could only spend it with one person, who would it be?

I would spend it with my father. There are a million questions I would love to ask him, and for whatever reason I have not. Besides, he's my Dad.

What are some movies or song titles that describe your life?

Life is a roller coaster, and I am not strapped in. (Not sure if that's a song or movie, but we'll go with it)

What are five quirks about you?

1. I smell socks before I put them on…every time.

2. I also smell underwear before I put them on.

3. I HATE mustard.

4. I shower 3+ times per day.

5. I can’t go to sleep with socks on.

I could not help but laugh at this answer!

What was the last experience that made you a stronger person?

I went for a run this morning...and I really didn't want to!

What are three traits that you don't like in people?

1. Meanness

2. Closed mindedness

3. Lying

If you could go to sleep and wake up someplace entirely different, where would it be?

On the beach of a tropical island in a hammock...because why wouldn't you want to be there?

What is one superpower you wish you possessed?

I wish I could fly.

Well I'm pretty sure everyone in LA would answer that as a way to avoid driving on the 405 Freeway. Thanks Dan! Be sure to check the Bionic Body schedule to take one of Dan's classes!
