Trainer Spotlight: Lizen Yumang

I've interviewed just about every trainer at Bionic Body, and someone that stood out as being very unique is Lizen Yumang. Unique in the fact that most of the other trainers either grew up playing sports or dancing, which gave them a more natural progression into training.

Lizen had a much different upbringing, saying asthma prevented her from playing or getting into sports. She also says that her family wasn't quite the best influence on her when it came to healthy eating:

"It was a lot of over eating and myths about working out and how "muscles are for men" sort of deal. After losing the unwanted weight from having kids, my entire outlook in life and how I feel about myself changed for the better. I made a career change to share my passion with people just like me."

Lizen grew up in California, but was born in the Philippines, and she started off her career in business and accounting. So how did she end up becoming a personal trainer?

"I had to share my experience and knowledge to help motivate others and empower them through positive changes from working out and taking care of themselves."

Who were your biggest influences growing up?

My Auntie Zenaida was the biggest influence. She taught me to put forth the best effort and want more for myself.

Name five celebrities (living) who you'd like to have dinner with.

Tough question because I'm not really into celebs. I'm more into athletes! But if I had to choose: Oprah, Jennifer Lopez, Michael Vaughn (Alias), and how about George St-Pierre (also known as GSP), who is a MMA fighter.

If you could start your own charity, what would it be about?

I would create a charity to raise funds to help provide self defense classes/awareness to teach every girl out there the basics. The bare minimum to prevent unwanted assault, rape, or oppression. It's so sad to hear the statistics out there. And to imagine my daughter ever experiencing anything like that just kills me.

What are the values you live by day-to-day?

Be kind. I tell my kids the same thing. I try to handle every situation with the approach of doing what's good and best. That I can look anyone in the eye, and know that I've given it my best.

What are five quirks about you?

1. I'm a creature of habit. When I like something, I feel the need to repeat it! Like a favorite food and favorite restaurant. I go on a streak.

2. I have a hard time sharing food or drinks. I like to eat my food in a certain order, so it drives me crazy when I share and someone eats it out of order. I think that's called OCD. LOL!

3. I drink almost everything with a straw.

4. I eat pineapple and strawberries with salt!

5. I don't drink water, I gulp!

If you were stranded on an island and could only pick one person who could be there with you, who would that be?

Really tough question. I have someone in my mind but I don't think he's available….haha, so I'll go with my second choice and say Rich Froning. Simply because he seems resourceful.

(If you're like me and had to Google Rich Froning, he is apparently a big CrossFit guy.) 

What is one skill you don't have that you wish you did?

I'd love the ability to have a poker face. I'm pretty transparent so I've never been good at negotiations and hard lines.
