What is Functional Training?

Functional training has its origins in rehabilitation. Physical therapists developed exercises that mimicked what patients did at home or work in order to return to their lives or jobs after an injury or surgery. Thus if a patient's job required repeatedly heavy lifting, rehabilitation would be targeted towards heavy lifting, if the patient were a parent of young children, it would be targeted towards moderate lifting and endurance, and if the patient were a marathon runner, training would be targeted towards re-building endurance.
Functional training involves mainly weight bearing activities targeted at core muscles of the abdomen and lower back, the explosive power center of the human body. Most fitness facilities have a variety of weight training machines, which target and isolate specific muscles. As a result the movements do not necessarily bear any relationship to the movements people make in their daily activities or sports.

What are the Benefits of Functional Training?

Functional training may lead to better muscular balance and joint stability, possibly decreasing the number of injuries sustained in an individual's performance in a sport. The benefits may arise from the use of training that emphasizes the body's natural ability to move in three anatomical planes of motion.
In comparison, machines can often restrict movements to a single plane of motion, which is an unnatural form of movement for the body and may potentially lead to faulty movement patterns or injury. In 2009 Spennewyn conducted research, published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, which compared functional training to fixed variable training techniques, this was considered the first research of its type comparing the two methods of strength training.
Results of the study showed incredible gains and benefits in the functional training group over fixed training equipment. Functional users had a 58% greater increase in strength over the fixed-form group.
Their improvements in balance were 196% higher over fixed and reported an overall decrease in joint pain by 30%.
The Bionic Body Track combines the best elements of functional movements combined with traditional bodybuilding methods to help clients achieve max muscle gains, lose body fat, increase muscle balance, develop core strength, and better their joint stability.

Can I Tone Up and Lose Weight With Resistance Bands?

Yes! Resistance bands have stood the test of time in the fitness and bodybuilding industry as well as physical therapy clinics. Until now there has not been an innovative, educational, and functionally effective solution for mounting the bands in variety of positions. This is important in order to align the angle of resistance to prevent excessive strain on the joints, tendons, and ligaments in order to prevent injury.
The most popular way to anchor resistance bands is with a door anchor. The door anchor is not effective because it limits the positions the band can be used, it is difficult to achieve proper alignment, and does not allow free range of motion or proper biomechanics alignment.
At Bionic Body we use a variety of different bands and attachments along with other functional training equipment to give you an effective results driven workout.

How Does the Bionic Body Track Work?

The BBT had a swivel at the attachment point that allows the user to change direction without the bands twisting to allow the efficient move from the front position into the side and reverse position to perform pushing and pulling movements.
Although the track is 6 feet tall, it’s sleek 1 inch wide and ½ inch thick frame is extremely user friendly and fun to use! The track has a sliding carriage that attaches to a resistance band with multiple attachments. With a simple 90-degree turn of the spring loaded knob the carriage can lock into one of the 36 positions or it can be left in the “slider” position to allow the carriage to slide freely on the track. The slider position allows the resistance band to move with the body without having to stop and re anchor the band. This position is used for dynamic functional movements, traditional strength training exercises, or simple stretching movements derived from Pilates and yoga.
Simply put, the BBT system allows the resistance to move with you. It replaces bulky free weights, cable machines, and heavy gym equipment.

Do you have traditional weight machines at Bionic Body?

No! We are a functional training studio and do not have traditional weight lifting machines. We have an endless variety of equipment ranging from kettle bells to monkey bars. A few other favorites are ropes, sandbags, boxing bags, slide boards, and medicine balls to name a few.

Do you have cardio machines?

Yes! We offer 100% human powered cardio equipment that you won’t find in your traditional gym. In our upper studio we have the helix, which is a unique side to side elliptical like motion. It’s unique movement not only burns an insane amount of calories, it also tones the inner and outer thigh area while torching body fat.
